TRO Awards

TRO Brian Bennison Practitioner of the Year Award

The Brian Bennison Practitioner Award is presented annually to a practitioner in Ontario who has made significant and outstanding contributions to the field of therapeutic recreation through their work and/or their community involvement.

Brian Bennison spent 10 consecutive years on the TRO Board, and during his time gave so much of himself to advance the field of therapeutic recreation in the province of Ontario and build the foundation for Therapeutic Recreation Ontario (TRO). In honor of those contributions, the Practitioner Award committee and the TRO Board are extremely pleased to have our first professional award named after him.

Since 2006, committees of volunteers have carefully reviewed nominations that reflect Therapeutic Recreation Ontario’s Standards of Practice and Core Values. The application requirements include a nomination form, a short narrative describing the nominee’s contributions, a minimum of 2 letters of reference. Supporting documentation may also be submitted (e.g., articles, news releases, photos, publications, program details, and professional awards).

In order to be eligible for the award, a nominee must be a Registered or Professional member of Therapeutic Recreation Ontario (TRO) and must work in a direct client service capacity. The award is presented at the annual TRO Conference to a practitioner who demonstrates excellence in relation to the Core Values and Standards of Practice outlined in the “Standards of Practice for Therapeutic Recreation” document.
