Spring has sprung. The birds are chirping and the flowers are bursting. It is a time of hope and new growth. It has been just over a year since our entire world began the fight of its lifetime. As Recreation Therapy professionals, you have continued to be innovative and creative, putting the people you serve first.

You have also created a provincial sense of community through connecting with your communities of practice and TR talks. You have stayed connected and have supported each other at different times of need.

At the provincial level, I am so proud of TRO’s advocacy efforts over the past year to create greater awareness about our profession. Through TRO’s partnership with Global Public Affairs, a public relations consulting firm, we have had meetings with the Ministries of Health and Long-Term Care, Seniors and Accessibility, Ontario’s Patient Ombudsman, the Deputy Chief of Staff for Premier Doug Ford, and have also spoken before the Lead Commissioners of Ontario’s Long-Term Care COVID-19 Commission, and the Ministry of Finance’s 2021 Budget Consultations.

We have also created a media strategy, and have had various local newspapers pick up our story. We have submitted a letter directly to the Premier’s Office, asking for recognition of this profession.

As TRs we look for the silver linings and to see HOPE. As we continue to look forward, I encourage eligible voting members to join our AGM meeting on May 12 over your lunch hour. This is your opportunity to see what the TRO Board and volunteers have been doing over the past year, and also to thank outgoing board members and welcome new board members.

Lastly, I am very excited for our upcoming 2021 TRO conference, with three half-day sessions on June 2, 9, and 16. This is a time to be inspired, to make your light shine brighter if you feel it has become dim. Now is your time, to go and register.

Sincerely,
Katherine Plested, R/TRO
President
