Sue Verrilli, R/TRO, President
Sue Verrilli is a Recreation Therapist at Health Sciences North in Sudbury, Ontario. She has worked on the Intensive Rehabilitation Unit for over 20 years. Since 2010, she has worked part time on the unit and part time with the Northeastern Ontario Stroke Network. Her position as the Community & Long Term Care Specialist takes her across her region assisting organizations in implementing best practices for stroke care. She graduated from the University of Waterloo Recreation and Leisure Studies program in 1987 and has been working in the field since 1992. She is a registered member of TRO (R/TRO). Much of her leisure time is spent with her three boys, usually watching a sporting event.

Katherine Plested, R/TRO, President-Elect (and Past President)
Katherine has 10 years of experience working in the Therapeutic Recreation field. She is a graduate of Brock University, graduating with a Bachelor degree of Recreation and Leisure Studies, specializing in Therapeutic and Inclusive Leisure (Honours). She started her career in Halifax, NS and has spent the last eight years within the company of St. Joseph’s Healthcare London. Her most current position at St. Joseph’s Healthcare is working at Mount Hope Centre for Long Term Care. This position, provides the opportunity to focus on developing and providing meaningful and therapeutic recreation programs using the Leisure and Wellbeing Model as the framework for the practice.
She is a Registered Professional member of Therapeutic Recreation Ontario (R/TRO). Katherine is very excited to have joined the TRO board, as she views this opportunity as a place to continue to advocate for the profession of TR and to provide support to TRO members in order to elevate the TR practice.
Lindsey Oretan, R/TRO, CTRS, Treasurer
After five years at the University of Waterloo participating in the co-op program, Lindsey graduated with an Honors B.A. in Therapeutic Recreation with a Minor in Psychology in 2005. In 2009 Lindsey went through the registration process to become an R/TRO member and went on to become a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS). Currently Lindsey is a Recreation Therapist at Grand River Hospital at the Freeport Site in the Specialized Mental Health Program.She enjoys spending time with her husband, two little boys, cat and dog and spends her free time running half marathons and playing ultimate frisbee.
Monica Almas, R/TRO, CTRS
My name is Monica Almas and I have been working in the field of Therapeutic Recreation (TR) for 14 years. I completed my undergraduate degree in TR from the University of Waterloo and I maintain my registration designation, R/TRO, and my Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) credentials. The majority of my career has been spent working in the mental health sector, working at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton, where my last position was working in the Concurrent Disorders program on the inpatient unit. I started teaching at Mohawk College in the Recreation Therapy program in 2016, and I recently started as a full time Faculty member teaching in this program in August 2017. I believe that wearing the hat of a TR practitioner and now a TR educator as well, I have an opportunity to provide contributions towards the work that TRO does from multiple perspectives. I am excited to join the TRO Board of Directors as a Membership and Professional services board member, as I am passionate about TR and committed to supporting TRO, its members, students in the field of TR, and future potential members. I look forward to working with you!
Nancy de Vera, R/TRO
Nancy is the Director of Resident Programs at Altamont Care Community and also works for the City of Toronto in the Adaptive and Inclusive Recreation Department as a Special Needs Recreation Program Staff, supporting adults and seniors in various Recreation Programs. With a H.BA from the University of Toronto, Nancy is a graduate of the Post-Graduate Therapeutic Recreation Program with Honors at Georgian College. Working the field of Therapeutic Recreation for over seven year, Nancy has gained unique experiences from complex care, rehab hospitals, and day programs working with adults and seniors with developmental disabilities, mental health challenges, and aging health concerns. She has found her niche in long-term care where Nancy is grateful to be a part of the Residents` lives and witness, alongside them, as they discover new avenues of what life has to offer.
Jackie Frail, R/TRO
Jackie Frail is currently a professor with Niagara College, teaching in the Recreation Therapy and Recreation & Leisure Services programs. Prior to joining Niagara College, Jackie worked 10 years with St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton within their Mental Health and Addictions program. Jackie completed her diploma in Recreation & Leisure Services with Mohawk College and went on to complete her degree with Brock University, specializing in Therapeutic Recreation. Jackie is an R/TRO member and currently the co-chair of the Registration Committee with TRO. In addition, Jackie has severed as a member on several TRO sub-committees including the Registration committee, College of Psychotherapy Working Group, Therapeutic Recreation Practice and Research Journal committee and the Therapeutic Recreation Provincial Educators Steering Committee. To round things out, she has two amazing children and a wonderful husband!
Jeff Gall, R/TRO
Jeff has eight years of experience in Therapeutic Recreation in Long Term Care and Retirement environments. He has worked in various areas and levels of care across different organizations gaining valuable knowledge as well as advocating and educating on the benefits of Therapeutic Recreation and seniors care. In his most current role, Jeff is the Director of Resident Programs and Admissions at Secord Trails Care Community. He is a graduate of The University of Western Ontario with a BA in Psychology; as well as, Georgian College with a Post-Graduate diploma in Therapeutic Recreation. Jeff is extremely excited to be a part of the TRO Board and is looking forward to working alongside other TRs to help advocate, educate and advance the Therapeutic Recreation profession.
Nancy Kahl, R/TRO DIP
Therapeutic Recreation is a second career for Nancy; her experience over the past year has involved working at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton with the Forensic Psychiatry Program. Nancy attended Mohawk College where she earned her Honours Diploma of Recreation Therapy. Nancy was the successful recipient of the Adrienne Gilbert Student Award of Excellence in 2016. She sat on the Program Advisory Committee at Mohawk College as a student representative and currently as a recent graduate. Prior to working in the field Nancy was a Registered Massage Therapist with 15 years working in various practices, as well as in her own business serving the Ford Motor Company of Canada. Currently, Nancy is attending Laurentian University part-time working towards a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. She has her L1 CrossFit Certification and has been training adults of various ages and fitness backgrounds for four years. She is enthusiastic to sit on the board as a member for her own professional growth as well to help with the continued development of the profession.
Katherine Lee, R/TRO
Katherine has been in the field for 11 years currently in the position of Recreation Therapist at Royal Victoria Regional Health Center for the last 4 1/2 years working with the Geriatric Population. Previously Katherine has worked as a Recreation Therapy Assistant and Activity aid in the Long Term Care sector. Katherine has attended George Brown College graduating with her diploma in Recreation, Georgian College with a Post-Graduate diploma in Therapeutic Recreation (Honours) and is currently working toward her Bachelor’s Degree in Gerontology from Laurentian University. Katherine is excited to be a part of the TRO Board, with the field of TR growing she is excited to see how she can help advocate for this profession.
Shannon McCallum, R/TRO
Shannon has a wealth of experience in the field of Therapeutic Recreation and is currently the Program Coordinator/Professor for the Post-Grad TR Certificate Program at St. Lawrence College. As a busy mom of four, Shannon has managed to achieve the 2014 TRO Brian Bennison Practitioner Award, the 2013 Spinal Cord Injury Ontario Healthcare Provider of the Year, has served as Marketing and Sponsorship Chair for the 2013 TRO Conference, was featured in the 2012-2013 SCI Ontario Annual Report for work with spinal cord patients and was the lead in developing the provincially distributed “Meaningful Activity” education poster for the Southeastern Ontario Stroke Network.
Sonia Roul, R/TRO
Sonia has been working as a Recreation Therapist in the Long Term Care Sector for the last 15 years and is currently employed as a Recreation & Leisure Partner with Sienna Senior Living Inc. In her role as R&L Partner she supports the leads within the Recreation Department and their teams in facilitating positive and meaningful experiences for the people they serve. Sonia is a graduate from Brock University with a Bachelor of Recreation & Leisure Studies. Sonia has also completed Post-Graduate Therapeutic Recreation courses from Georgian College. She is a Registered Professional member of Therapeutic Recreation Ontario (R/TRO) and is very excited to be on the TRO Board for the first time.
