2026-2027 Webinar Series: Paws, People and Practice: Co-Trialing Robotic Pets in Long-Term Care
Research has identified positive outcomes associated with robotic animals, including promoting social interaction, reducing distress, and enhancing quality of life. However, barriers to maximizing their therapeutic value remain, including animal design and functionality and the knowledge and skills staff need to use them effectively.
Whether you are a frontline staff member who has used robotic animals in recreation therapy, a manager involved in purchasing decisions, or new to robotic pets, this webinar offers an inside look at a collaborative research study exploring their use in long-term care. The study examined five robotic pets, including newer models such as the Percy cat, MetaCat, and MetaDog alongside widely used Joy for All robotic pets. Researchers explored resident and staff experiences, comparisons across models, and resource and training needs. Attendees will be introduced to the features and functions of the five robotic pets and guided through the study methodology, key findings, and lessons learned. Presenters will highlight practical implications for recreation therapy practice and how collaborative research can support more informed, responsive, and meaningful use of robotic animals in long-term care.
